Md. Man Sentenced for Role In Prescription Drug Ring...

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2005-11-04 03:52.

Greenbelt, Md. (AP) - A Westover man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for his role in a ring that fraudulently obtained and distributed powerful prescription drugs such as Oxycontin.

In September, 46-year-old Melvin Williams pleaded guilty to drug charges in U.S. District Court. He was one of 13 people indicted in the case - eleven others have pleaded guilty while one awaits trial in December.

Prosecutors alleged Williams acted as a "runner" for the ring that used fraudulent prescriptions to buy drugs such as Oxycontin, Percocet and Endocet at Maryland pharmacies. To pay for the drugs, the group used stolen or bought Maryland Medicaid health insurance cards.

Authorities believe more than 2,000 fraudulent prescriptions were used to buy drugs.
