Crime Watch: Meat bandit backs into grocer...

Stop & Shop on Watertown Street has been the target for food thieves twice this past week.

· On April 17 at 4:58 p.m., security spotted a shopper leaving the store with a carriage full of meats. The suspect took the estimated $400 worth of food to his car, placed it in the trunk and headed back into the store. Security officers stopped the suspect and asked him to return the meats, which he agreed to.

Two Stop & Shop employees followed the suspect to his car, which he put in reverse and drove with the door open. The door reportedly struck the arm of one employee, and the car proceeded to back into two parked cars in the lot. The suspect, identified as a 47-year-old male of Theurer Park will be summonsed to Waltham District Court for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a car), two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, property damage, shoplifting, and operating with a suspended license.

· On April 20 at 8:48 p.m. the store manager spotted a female with a basket full of groceries in the produce aisle dashing to the front door without paying. The items in the basket were worth $152.09. The suspect, Candice Lavoie, 21, of 1 Sir Oliver Way in Bourne, was stopped by police on Watertown Street and arrested and charged with shoplifting over $100.

Police received word that on on April 22 at 2 a.m. three women were leaving the scene of a car accident near Templeton Parkway and Maplewood Avenue. According to reports, officers began searching for the suspects, who got away on foot. They found the females hiding in the backyard of a nearby house. Police spoke with the suspects, one who had a large laceration on her head and was transported to Mt. Auburn Hospital. The driver of the car, identified as Kara Snellman, 26, of 29 Merrifield Ave. was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, and on an outstanding warrant from Cambridge District Court for operating without a license.

Scott Hume, 41, of 5 Howe St. was arrested and charged with assault and battery on April 19 at 7:08 p.m.

Police reported that on April 16 at 12:46 p.m. security officers inside Marshall’s on Arsenal Street observed a woman place items inside a large black-and-pink bag and a Filene’s Basement shopping bag. Among the items were 10 bottles of Perry Ellis perfume, 17 pairs of female slippers, four men’s wallets, two pairs of socks and two spa treatment creams worth a total of $399.63.

After confronting the suspect, identified as Nicole Al Awadhi, 26, of 21 South Waverly St. in Brighton, police found that she was allegedly in Filene’s Basement earlier in the day and stole 12 pairs of socks, six bottles of Britney Spears “Fantasy” perfume, four Adidas T-shirts, one Perry Ellis blouse, and five pairs of sweat pants worth a total of $362.90. Al Awadhi was arrested and charged with two counts of larceny over $250.

While booking and searching the suspect, police found a Tylenol PM bottle with pills of Lorazepam, Xanex, Seroquel and Oxycontin. Police also found a bag with a substance believed to be marijuana. Al Awadhi was also charged with possession of a Class B and Class D substance.

After a workout at Super Fitness, 36 Arlington St., the driver of a 2005 Toyota Matrix left the gym at 8:30 p.m. on April 18 to find her car intact. She reportedly went back in for a few minutes, and upon her return, someone has allegedly broken the front passenger window and stole her purse, which contained a cell phone worth $100 and a checkbook. Police are investigating.

Police received reports on April 22 at 2:39 a.m. that a car crashed on Desmond Road and was on the side of the road with its reverse lights on. Reports state that the car hit a hydrant and had damage to the front driver’s side tire. The driver, Stephen Bell, 26, of 34 Benjamin Rd. in Belmont, told police that he swerved from an animal and struck the hydrant. Detecting alcohol on his breath, police arrested and charged Bell with operating under the influence of alcohol.

An employee of Kids Footlocker on Arsenal Street reported to police on April 19 at 11:04 p.m. that two juvenile girls were trying on shoes and put a pair of Timberland boots worth $74.99 into a pink backpack and left. Police stopped the girls inside Best Buy across the street, and found the boots along with silver jewelry from Claire’s and Everest KMS Jewelers, and three pairs of underwear and two pairs of shorts from Tello’s worth $31.94. The juveniles will be summonsed to Waltham District Court for shoplifting charges.

According to Detective Sergeant William Logue, during the week of April 16 and April 22, the Police Department responded to 491 calls for service and/or assistance, which resulted in nine arrests, including three for driving while intoxicated, one for shoplifting/larceny, one for a felony, one for a traffic law offense, one warrant, one for protective custody and one for domestic violence.
