PORTSMOUTH — The man who allegedly held a paramedic at knifepoint during a disturbance at Portsmouth Regional Hospital early Tuesday remains in jail on $20,000 cash bail.
Jason L. Fuller, 39, of Newmarket was arraigned at Portsmouth District Court on charges of felony criminal threatening and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and simple assault.
Police responded to Portsmouth Regional Hospital at about 2:30 a.m. for a report of a suicidal man. Fuller had slashed his left wrist and then when medical personnel attempted to treat him, he swore at them and was combative.
Fuller then allegedly held the paramedic at knifepoint before he could get away. Officer David Colby responded to the scene and found Fuller standing outside the emergency room door bleeding from the wrist. Fuller then allegedly said he wanted Colby to shoot him, which officers refer to as "suicide by cop."
Police say Fuller admitted he is an alcoholic and was taking antidepressant medications. He was allegedly intoxicated and had OxyContin and other drugs in his system.
Backup officers including Aaron Goodwin, Eric Bentz and John Lee arrived on scene. The four police officers and two state troopers eventually subdued Fuller by use of pepper spray.
Fuller tried to get away again, but was restrained. He suffered a deep cut that required stitches.
Prosecutor Sgt. Corey MacDonald requested high cash bail because Fuller has a lengthy criminal history dating back to the early 1990s including convictions for assault and battery, disorderly conduct and criminal threatening. Fuller is also wanted on a warrant out of Massachusetts for violating a protective order.
However, MacDonald said authorities are not going to extradite him.
Morrison asked Fuller if he wanted to speak on bail and he declined.
"You're going to set whatever you want," Fuller said.
