Danger at hospital...

Submitted by admin on Wed, 2007-04-25 11:53.

PORTSMOUTH — After a night of drinking and taking Oxycontin, a Newmarket man was left by friends at the local hospital, where with a slashed wrist he held a paramedic at knifepoint and asked officers to shoot him, allege police.

Police were called at 2:25 a.m. Tuesday by an employee of the Portsmouth Regional Hospital emergency room, who reported a man walked in with a laceration to his left wrist. The man — later identified as Jason Fuller, 39 — had severed blood vessels and was bleeding heavily, said police spokesman Lt. Rodney McQuate.

As officers were responding, emergency room personnel called again to tell police Fuller had become agitated and left through a back door. A third call from the hospital then reported Fuller assaulted hospital staff and held a knife to the chest of a paramedic, while threatening, "I'm going to kill you."

McQuate said Officer David Colby confronted Fuller outside the emergency room, displayed his service weapon and instructed him to get on the ground. Instead, said the police lieutenant, Fuller began shouting, "Shoot me! Shoot me!"

Officer Eric Benz then sprayed Fuller with pepper spray, and officers John Lee and Aaron Goodwin "took him to the ground," said McQuate. With assistance from state troopers Chris Story and Seth Gaar, Fuller was then brought inside the hospital, said police.

"It took all six of them to get him in the hospital," said McQuate, adding that, once inside, Fuller was placed in four-point restraints, which he broke through.

In the meantime, "blood was pouring out of his arm," said the police spokesman.

As the six officers worked to restrain Fuller, Officer Rochelle Jones traced information from a hospital bracelet Fuller was wearing to his residence in Newmarket. Jones then learned from Fuller's roommates that they'd driven him to the hospital for psychiatric help at his own request, said McQuate.

Due to his agitated behavior, Fuller's self-inflicted wound was not stitched until almost 7 a.m., said the lieutenant. Three hours later, he was brought to Portsmouth District Court, where he was arraigned on a felony charge of criminal threatening/use of a deadly weapon and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and simple assault.

Prosecutor Corey MacDonald told the court that Fuller's criminal history includes convictions for assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, criminal threatening and numerous motor vehicle offenses. He was also wanted on a warrant from Massachusetts for a charge of violating a protective order, but Massachusetts officials declined to extradite him to face that charge, said MacDonald.

Judge Stephen Morrison ordered Fuller held on $20,000 cash-only bail and advised the defendant to seek legal counsel for the "very serious charges." Asked by the judge if he had anything to say about the bail, Fuller replied, "Nah. You're gonna set it however you want anyway."

The judge ordered Fuller to return to the court May 1 for a probable cause hearing.

Following his arraignment, Fuller, who also cites an address of 3 Emerald Drive, Barrington, fell in a district court holding cell and complained about pain.

He was examined by Portsmouth Fire Department paramedics and cleared for transport to the Rockingham County House of Corrections.
