PORTSMOUTH — Police subdued a suicidal Newmarket man who allegedly held a Portsmouth Regional Hospital paramedic at knifepoint early Tuesday morning.
Police say James Fuller, 39, of Newmarket, was under the influence of OxyContin, Demerol and alcohol when he asked his roommates to admit him in to the hospital's mental health center around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Once there, Fuller allegedly cut his wrists with a knife, held a knife to a paramedic's chest and threatened to kill him, according to Lt. Rodney McQuate.
When police arrived, the paramedic had escaped and Fuller was outside the emergency room doors screaming obscenities. Officer Dave Colby drew his gun and ordered Fuller to the ground, but Fuller refused and told the officer to shoot him.
Officers Aaron Goodwin, Eric Bentz and John Lee responded shortly after and were able to subdue Fuller with pepperspray.
Fuller allegedly continued fighting while paramedics tried to treat him at the hospital. Eventually he was treated for his injuries.
Fuller was arraigned Tuesday morning in Portsmouth District Court on a felony charge of criminal threatening and misdemeanor charges of simple assault and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $20,000 cash.
It was the second incident in two days that a “suicide by cops” was prevented at the hospital. On Monday, a suicidal man threatened to shoot a Portsmouth police officer unless the officer shot him first. Officer Andre Wassouf convinced the man to turn himself in without incident.
