AYLESFORD — The RCMP says a massive drug operation in this Kings County village will put a major dent in the illegal drug trade in the Annapolis Valley.
Police said Saturday that a raid on a residence in Aylesford, which began Friday afternoon and lasted late into the night, netted about 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, 2.3 kilograms of hashish, 5.4 kilograms of marijuana buds, LSD, prescription drugs such as Dilaudid, OxyContin and morphine, several thousand dollars in stolen property, $180,000 in cash and contraband cigarettes, tobacco and illegal liquor.
Twenty firearms were also seized, including handguns and long rifles, some of them loaded.
In a news release Saturday, the RCMP said the raid in Aylesford was part of a six-month investigation, aimed at cracking down on the illegal drug trade, and that there were other seizures involved.
Annapolis Valley Traffic Services, New Minas and Kingston RCMP, the provincial Street Crime Enforcement Unit and the Halifax RCMP drug section participated in Friday's raid.
An Aylesford man who did not want to be identified told The Chronicle Herald that crime has gone up in the area because of the use of hard drugs.
"I'd like to see them clean up the hard stuff," he said.
"The kids are getting into the pills and the coke. This hard stuff is causing a lot of heartache."
Another resident, who lives near the site and who also asked not to be identified, agreed. "There's too much drug dealing and drug use in a village this size, and it's not a healthy thing."
A couple in their 50s were arrested during the raid, and police said in their release that the man was still in custody.
They will be arraigned Monday in Kentville provincial court.
