Doctor pleads guilty to drug counts, will surrender medical license...

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2007-04-20 22:53.

Savage, 49, who will be sentenced May 18, wept and was nearly inaudible as she said "guilty" when Common Pleas Judge Michael L. Tucker asked her how she would plead.

Savage, who declined to comment after the hearing, will be eligible for probation. All of the counts she pleaded to are fourth- or fifth-degree felonies. A fourth-degree felony has a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison.

According to the indictment, Savage's drug counts involved the painkiller OxyContin and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

The State Medical Board of Ohio revoked Savage's medical license in September, citing an alleged OxyContin addiction. According to the board, Savage could have reapplied for her license if she had acknowledged her addiction and entered a board-approved treatment program — something she refused to do after the board ordered her to do in May — and to submit to monitoring of her recovery.

The plea agreement eliminates that possibility, assistant county prosecutor Jennifer Heapy said after the hearing.
