SPEAK OUT: STOP hopes to start kids on right road...

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2007-04-20 20:53.

What will it take for more teenagers not to drink and drive? The question gets asked after the funerals by grieving families and by some of the victims' friends. Yet months and years later, broader public concern seems to fade like the distant warning of a past hurricane season.

Until someone crashes again, taking our teens' lives and shattering other families.

It's time to bring drunken-driving prevention back into the public spotlight, and hopefully build a longer-lasting effort to keep our children safe.

The consequences of risky decision-making will be clearly demonstrated for high school and, to a lesser extent, middle school students. Older students will hear testimonials, including a 2002 SL graduate who killed two of his friends in a drunken-driving crash; SL juniors may view and respond to (they and parents can choose to opt out) graphic photos of crash carnage; others will view and hopefully reflect on presentations about decision making, drug use and driving. And there's much more.

This is the fourth year S.T.O.P. will bring prevention and safe-driving programs to the schools. The goals are two-fold: engage students to see how their choices affect friends, families, and themselves for the rest of their lives. And also, give them tools to make better decisions, and for those reaching the driving age, to become safe operators.

We hope to capture students' attention. But some parents may rightly ask, how much good are such ‘‘shock-and-awe'' programs if they only run one week, or maybe twice, a year?
