Massachusetts targets OxyContin maker...

Submitted by admin on Thu, 2005-10-27 18:52.

BOSTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly is considering suing the maker of the painkiller OxyContin for not warning of its serious potential for addiction.

In a letter to Connecticut-based Purdue Pharma, Reilly alleges the company knew of the health and safety risks of OxyContin -- including the risks of opiate abuse, dependence and addiction -- but didn't warn doctors and patients.

Massachusetts is facing an epidemic of OxyContin abuse, the Boston Herald said.

Reilly wrote he wants to meet with Purdue officials before deciding on filing suit.

Purdue last year, without admitting wrongdoing, reached a settlement with the state of West Virginia. The Food and Drug Administration has also sent the company warning letters.

Purdue spokesman Tim Bannon told the newspaper the company believes its "marketing of OxyContin has been appropriate and in compliance with Massachusetts law."
