Radford police captain, James Lawson, said officers have obtained a warrant charging Tim Sarver with one count of armed robbery.
Lawson said Sarver robbed the "Amer-fresh" market less than 24 hours after he escaped police custody Monday morning at the Pulaski County courthouse.
Sarver was in the New River Valley Regional Jail on charges of burglary, and writing bad checks. Those charges were filed last September.
Court records show he never made his court appearance.
Sarver pleaded guilty to 13 different charges during 2001, including planning a robbery, breaking and entering, and dealing the drug Oxycontin, according to court records.
While no inmate has ever escaped from the New River Valley Regional Jail, Sarver is the second inmate to escape custody off the jail premises since last October.
Sylvester "Tiny" Jackson was charged with assaulting a jail van driver outside the Galax police department on October 17, 2004.
