SAULT STE. MARIE - City police were summoned to the International Bridge at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, where they found border agents holding a Quebec man for possession of illegal substances. According to reports, Robin J. Foster, 42, of St. Joseph Du Loac, Que. was found in possession of three Oxycontin pills, two Trianal pills and, later, two packets of Rizatriptan - all controlled drugs. He had no prescription for any of the three.
City police arrested the man and jailed him on a drug possession charge.
SAULT STE. MARIE - Called to U.S. Customs at the International Bridge on Saturday, city police found there a man held for secreting a quantity of marijuana, a smaller amount of cocaine and a digital scale for measuring same at the border station. Border agents became suspicious when the man's vehicle smelled of hemp on the inspection line. Inside the vehicle, agents found 16.16 grams of marijuana stashed in various containers and a small bag of cocaine in the man's wallet.
Arrested by city officers at the scene was the driver, Christian J. Genier, 20, of Sudbury, Ont. on charges of possession to deliver marijuana and cocaine. A passenger in the vehicle was allowed to return to Canada with the vehicle while Genier was ushered off to the county jail.
SAULT STE. MARIE - Called to the War Memorial Hospital emergency room at 5:26 p.m. Sunday, city police found a man in an agitated state, accused of unruly behavior by the hospital staff. The man reportedly attempted to leave the hospital, then turned and confronted officers, at which time he was restrained and handcuffed. The man was eventually transferred to Northern Michigan Hospitals in Petoskey, apparently for mental health treatment. No arrest was made.
SAULT STE. MARIE - Summoned to Brady Hall on the LSSU campus at 2:43 a.m. Sunday, city police there encountered a youth discovered being sick of alcohol consumption in the dorm bathroom. According to reports, the youth acknowledged consuming a quantity of alcohol at a party earlier. The male's eyes were reportedly glassy and his speech slurred before he was arrested as a minor in possession. Brandon S. Gerig, 18, of Sault Ste. Marie was jailed on the charge.
KINROSS - The driver of a vehicle observed weaving along Tone Road in Kinross at 1 a.m. Sunday was unable to hold the vehicle on Kallio Road with the vehicle ending up in a roadside ditch. Sheriff's deputies following the vehicle found the man, John L. Ellis Jr., 40, of Kinross, unsteady on his feet with a smell of alcohol about him. Ellis passed three roadside sobriety tests but flunked a breathalyzer test and was arrested for drunk driving. He was later jailed on that charge.
KINROSS - State police at the Sault Post reported that a traffic stop on Gaines Highway for failure to signal a turn resulted in a firearms arrest Saturday evening. Billy W. Perry, 33, of Kinross was arrested at the scene for carrying an uncased firearm in his vehicle and was later jailed on that charge.
SAULT STE. MARIE - A driver escaped injury but his vehicle was heavily damaged at 10:10 a.m. Sunday when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, allowing the vehicle to leave the highway. The vehicle reportedly struck roadside reflectors and a large sign before rolling over several times, coming to rest on its roof.
The driver was not ticketed and emerged from the wreck uninjured.
On Saturday morning, a resident of the 1200 block of E. 15th Avenue reported that someone dumped a well-used recliner chair on the roadway. Investigating officers found no suspect apparent in the illegal dumping and arranged for the Street Department to remove the navigation obstruction.
Also on Saturday, a resident of the 1100 block of E. Eighth Avenue reported a window in his parked vehicle was broken by unknown vandals. Police on the scene found no evidence to suggest the instrument used or the identity of the vandal.
